The Year of the Fire Horse – Ride it without Fear

Chinese New Year and the Year of the Fire Horse are nearly upon us. The New Year commences on 17 February and will be a dynamic year that reflects the Horse's inherent traits of energy and passion with the intensity of the Fire element. It is seen as a year of dynamism, bold moves, passion, and a strong drive for success and innovation.

The Horse earned its distinguished place in the Chinese Zodiac through its legendary speed and unwavering endurance. Historically, horses were the backbone of Chinese society, indispensable for transportation, agriculture and military prowess. These crucial roles elevated the horse to become a symbol of power, nobility and loyalty.

In the Chinese Five Element Theory, FIRE (also represented by the colour “Red”) is the embodiment of;

•  Passion & Enthusiasm – a drive and zest for life

•  Dynamism & Innovation – the spark that ignites new ideas and propels decisive action

•  Brightness & Clarity – illuminating paths forward, fostering optimism and clear vision

•  Assertiveness & Leadership – the courage to lead, inspire and take initiative

Red is a colour revered in Chinese culture symbolising good fortune, joy and prosperity so red years are seen as auspicious times to take on new ventures.

Amidst this year of fire, the practices of Tai Chi and Qigong offer a vital counterbalance. In Chinese culture, true strength is never defined by speed alone, but by the harmony between movement and stillness. As the Fire Horse gallops forward with passion and intensity, Tai Chi and Qigong remind us to channel that energy with clarity, grounding, and intention.

These arts cultivate the very qualities needed in a Fire Horse year:

•  Rootedness - to steady the heat of ambition

•  Mindfulness - to transform impulsive fire into purposeful action

•  Softness within strength - allowing resilience without rigidity

•  Balanced vitality - so enthusiasm becomes sustainable rather than exhausting

Just as the Horse symbolises freedom, endurance, and spirited movement, Tai Chi and Qigong teach us to move with effortless power, guided not by force but by alignment, breath, and inner calm. Practising these disciplines in 2026 can help us ride the year’s dynamic currents with composure, harnessing the Fire Horse’s energy while staying centred, clear, and connected.

So, keep practising your Tai Chi and Qigong this year, while not shying away from trying new things, exploring new ventures, being active and aboveall, embracing the possibility of lifechanging opportunities and changes.
